My Journey from Cancer to Confidence
I never thought I’d be the one to hear the words, "You have breast cancer." The diagnosis shook me to my core, especially when the doctor explained that obesity was one of the contributing factors. With no family history of cancer, it became clear that my weight had played a major role. I had tried countless weight loss programs over the years, hopping from one to another, each time holding on to a glimmer of hope that this would finally be the one that worked. But each time, I ended up back where I started, or worse. I never fully committed because I felt like it was pointless. Why give my all if I was only going to gain the weight back?
The cancer diagnosis was a wake-up call that I couldn’t ignore. It made me realize that I needed to find a lasting solution—not just for my weight, but for my health and my future. Around that time, a friend mentioned bariatric surgery to me in passing. It wasn’t something I had been seeking, but the idea started to take root, and I couldn’t shake it.
What followed was a year-long process of preparing for the surgery. It took nearly twelve months just to get to the point where I could have the procedure, but that year was truly transformative. The doctors, nutritionists, and specialists provided me with so many resources and tools to help me understand the journey ahead. Despite not knowing anyone personally who had undergone the surgery, I felt ready. The preparation was thorough, and I began to feel hopeful in a way I hadn’t in years.
One memory that stands out from before the surgery is a work trip I took while still working in an industrial environment. My senior team was made up of young, fit individuals, all dedicated to their health and fitness. On this trip, we had to walk a considerable distance to get to our rental car. I remember my boss intentionally slowing down to let me keep up. It was the elephant in the room, me gasping for breath while everyone else seemed fine. That moment stuck with me—it was a vivid reminder that I needed to make a change.
The surgery itself was incredibly freeing. Learning to eat differently and follow the post-surgery restrictions was a process I embraced. For the first time in my life, I felt like I was forming a healthy relationship with food. I enjoyed following the steps, buying the right foods, and sticking to the plan. The results were even better than I had hoped for. By committing fully and cutting out negative influences, I found a balance that worked for me.
One of the most rewarding parts of my new life is walking my 17-year-old lab every day. We go for at least two miles, and people are always amazed at how healthy she looks. I know it’s because we’re both staying active together. And the way I dress now is completely different. For the first time, I choose clothes that make me feel good, not just ones that fit. That newfound confidence has been one of the biggest benefits of my weight loss.
Looking back, bariatric surgery was the best decision I’ve ever made. It gave me the chance to live again, not just for myself, but for my family. My only regret? I wish I had done it sooner.
